The stone sky by nk jemisin6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() I'm not sure if I'm so 'happy' that she turned into a Stone Eater, maybe I cried because she turned in a Stone Eater. How she turns to stone was the first moment I actually started crying, but how she is then turned into a Stone Eater so that she and Hoa will be together forever, I lost it. Yet, all she does is safe her daughter (and the world not too forget) in the end. When she and Nassun are reunited, she realises that she lost her mother role to Nassun because Nassun went through a lot too. I love that personality of Essun, she is strong and speaks up, but we know her internal struggles. She lost two children to death, one to her husband and she is pregnant of a fourth but dies before he is born. We see her struggle as a child and young woman, but also as an adult, as a mother. We are aware of her trauma and we know her character through and through. ![]() Because we follow Essun's past in the first book, we know what she went through and how she got to the point where she is now. ![]()

Hannah arendt origins6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This neglect is surprising in light of the significant “international turn” in the history of thought and intellectual history, the growing interest in Arendt’s thought within international theory and, above all, Arendt’s own unwavering commitment to plurality not simply as a characteristic of individuals but as an essential and intrinsically valuable effect of distinct territorial entities. Yet, we currently lack a comprehensive reconstruction of the extent to which Arendt’s thought was shaped by the fact of political multiplicity, that there are not one but many polities existing on earth and inhabiting the world. Virtually, all of her singular contributions to political and international thought were influenced by her lived experiences of, and historical reflections on, statelessness and exile, imperialism, transnational totalitarianism, world wars, the nuclear revolution, the founding of Israel, war crimes trials, and the war in Vietnam. However, far less attention has been paid to the significance of other specifically and irreducibly international experiences and events. ![]() It is commonplace to situate Arendt’s political and historical thought as a response to totalitarianism. This article examines the multiple ways in which Hannah Arendt’s thought arose historically and in international context, but also how we might think about history and theory in new ways with Arendt. ![]()

Leviathan scott6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() When planning out his trilogy, Scott Westerfeld took inspiration from real rumors about the plot to assassinate the Archduke, followed the timeline of the real war, but centered the story on the Archduke’s (fictional) son, Alek. ![]() With World War I brewing, Alek and Deryn’s paths cross in the most unexpected way…taking them on a fantastical, around-the-world adventure that will change both their lives forever. But her secret is in constant danger of being discovered. All he has is a battletorn war machine and a loyal crew of men.ĭeryn Sharp is a commoner, disguised as a boy in the British Air Service. Prince Aleksander, would-be heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, is on the run. This period of time always interested Westerfeld, and he was particularly intrigued by how the tragedy of one family - the death of the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife - could start a war that would leave 37 million people dead and Europe devastated. ![]() ![]() Leviathanis an alternative history of World War I. In fact, Uglies was one of the first YA books I read as an adult, and I only picked it up because Mister BS taught a unit using the book his first year teaching. It is at once steampunk, science fiction, historical, and speculative fiction. Scott Westerfeld, who is most famous for his popular Uglies series, has also written a fantastic series for young adults that blurs genres. I had the pleasure of seeing one of my favorite authors speak at YALSA’s Young Adult Literature Symposium this past weekend. ![]()

Nesrine malik book6/6/2023 ![]() Robin Jones positively reviewed the book for The Paris Review, as did Sonja van der Westhuizen in a review for the South African Sunday Times. It was first released in paperback on 20 August 2020 and a new edition was released in 2021. It discusses "toxic myths" on matters such as freedom of speech, political correctness, racial and identity politics, and national myths (particularly in relation to the United Kingdom and the United States, and how these impact decision-making), discussing and how these concepts have been misrepresented – often to oppose progressive causes – and encouraging readers to question accepted norms. ![]() We Need New Stories is a non-fiction book written by journalist and author Nesrine Malik in 2019. ![]()

Daka hermon books6/5/2023 ![]() I know I would want them on my team if I had to escape from the Seeker, that's for sure! One of the best scary middle grade books I've read in a VERY long time! Their friendship was so compelling and they had their own emotional baggage that made the characters feel more real. Justin, Nia and Lyric were three fantastic protagonists who were very fun to follow. Developments happened that really enriched the world and it went beyond what I was expecting. It's the right amount of scary I think for children who read, and just a fun ride for the adults who still love their middle grade. ![]() ![]() The atmosphere was fab and I was genuinely worried for the kids. This book is chef's kiss and I loved reading it. Is it the Seeker snatching the children? Justin is marked and it's only a matter of time before he has to play hide and seek for his life. Then, a game of hide and seek goes wrong at Zee's homecoming party, and one by one the kids who played go missing. Justin is glad to have his friend Zee back after he went missing a year ago - but something seems off with him. A truly chilling middle grade that is PERFECT to read if you're after genuine chills. ![]() |
